Decide how employees get charging time.
First-come-first-served use can be enough when chargers are rarely busy. As demand becomes less predictable, it may create queues or require informal coordination. Reservable charging times are particularly useful when employees need to know in advance that workplace charging will be available, though the right approach depends on each workplace.
Make the rules visible.
A workplace EV charging policy should make bookable hours, maximum duration and the advance booking window clear. It should also explain how fair access is maintained and what drivers should do when a booking ends.
Make availability easy to see.
Employees should be able to see available charging time without walking to the car park or messaging colleagues. A shared schedule gives everyone the same view and makes start and end times explicit.
Measure unmet demand, not just charger usage.
Busy chargers do not automatically mean more hardware is needed. Returned or cancelled time affects the real picture, while repeated requests that cannot be accommodated provide a stronger signal that current capacity is falling short.
When should a workplace add more chargers?
Persistent inability to accommodate employee charging needs after reasonable scheduling and sharing is more informative than an isolated busy period. Workplace charging management should consider both how existing time is allocated and whether genuine unmet demand continues.
